International Legal Affairs

Strategic coordination of cross-border matters, supported by a network of local legal advisors.

Wellstein Mora Rodriguez International s.a. (WMR) assists clients with the coordination and strategic management of legal matters involving multiple jurisdictions, whether in the context of commercial transactions, litigation, or mandates requiring the involvement of professionals established abroad.

In an environment where business activities, contractual relationships, and disputes increasingly transcend national borders, our role is to centralize, structure, and coordinate international legal workstreams, in close collaboration with local counsel and professional partners in the relevant jurisdictions.

Beyond Latin America, where the firm has developed significant experience, our Montreal office also leverages francophone networks and long-standing professional relationships to manage matters involving various regions around the world.

Our role: coordination and strategic direction

To streamline and centralize complex international matters, our team coordinates from Montreal the legal diligences required from multiple foreign professionals, ensuring consistency and strategic alignment throughout the mandate.

This coordination role may include, in particular:

  • the negotiation of international contracts;
  • the review and validation of contractual clauses under local law, through counsel established in the relevant jurisdiction;
  • the coordination of legal representation in cross-border disputes;
  • the organization and supervision of investigations or legal due-diligence files;
  • the recognition, enforcement, or translation of foreign legal or judicial documents.

The ability of WMR’s lawyers to navigate and understand multiple legal systems allows for a global and coherent view of legal issues, while maintaining an efficient allocation of resources and close attention to cost management.

For example, the preliminary review of a contract drafted in English, French, Spanish, or Portuguese enables the early identification of issues relating to taxation, jurisdiction, or applicable law, before targeted validation is sought from local counsel.

Coordination of international litigation

In litigation matters, WMR coordinates the work of local counsel in order to:

  • define a consistent and overarching litigation strategy;
  • ensure procedural coherence across proceedings before courts in multiple jurisdictions;
  • oversee the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments, whether in Canada or abroad.

From Canada, WMR is able to maintain a comprehensive view of international disputes, particularly where issues of jurisdiction, applicable law, or procedural exceptions in favor of foreign courts arise.

International experience

WMR lawyers regularly coordinate proceedings and conduct legal reviews in connection with contractual or judicial mandates involving, among others:

  • Europe (including Spain and France);
  • the Caribbean (including Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin, and Panama);
  • the United States;
  • multiple countries in Latin America;
  • as well as jurisdictions such as Hong Kong and Ghana.

In contractual matters, WMR lawyers review and structure agreements from Quebec to ensure their coherence and enforceability across multiple foreign jurisdictions, working in close collaboration with local counsel.
